What do you readers usually eat fried youtiao with? Normally, it's paired with tea or coffee as a breakfast item. But this time, we're sharing a new and unique flavor by mixing it with beef to make a fried youtiao beef dish for you to try.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons and 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 8 tablespoons chicken stock (or beef stock)

  • 12 oz (340 grams) beef, cut into small pieces about 2 inches square
  • 1/2 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon dark soy sauce and 1 tablespoon light soy sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon vinegar
  • Cornstarch slurry (mix 2 teaspoons cornstarch with 2 teaspoons water until smooth)

  • 1 fried youtiao (Chinese doughnut)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon thinly sliced spring onion

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. In a large bowl, mix the beef thoroughly with the baking soda and 2 teaspoons of oil, then marinate for about 10 minutes.

2. Cut the fried youtiao into pieces about 2 inches long.

3. Heat a wok and add 1 tablespoon of oil. Once the oil is hot, add the beef and stir-fry for about 2 to 3 minutes. Then remove it separately onto a plate.

4. Add another tablespoon of oil to the wok. Once hot, add the sugar. When the sugar has dissolved into the oil, add the onions.

5. After stir-frying for about 2 to 3 minutes, add the chicken stock (or beef stock), light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, and vinegar, and bring to a boil. Then add the fried beef back into the wok and stir well to combine.

6. Once the liquid comes back to a boil, add the cornstarch slurry and cook until it thickens.

7. Finally, add the fried youtiao and stir-fry for about 20 seconds.

And there you have it — a delicious plate of fried youtiao with beef stir-fry. Transfer it to a bowl, sprinkle a little spring onion on top, and enjoy it while it's tasty!
