Let's try making the seaweed soup that's cooked and eaten on special occasions in Korean movies.

Also called birthday soup

In Korea, seaweed soup is also called birthday soup.

When a woman has just given birth, the seaweed soup, which is rich in various nutrients, helps her recover her health and also promotes breast milk production. Because of this, it's traditionally drunk after childbirth, and it has become a soup that's commonly eaten on birthdays and special occasions.

Ingredients

  • Dried Korean seaweed (miyeok) - 15 grams
  • Beef or meat, cut into small pieces - 120 grams
  • Sea salt - 1/4 of a teaspoon (regular salt can also be used)
  • Black pepper

  • Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Fish sauce - 1 tablespoon
  • Garlic - 1 teaspoon
  • Water

Method

Soak the Korean seaweed in cold water for about 5 to 10 minutes. Drain the water, then rinse the seaweed repeatedly under running tap water. Squeeze the seaweed and drain it well. If the seaweed strands are too long, cut them with scissors.

Mix the meat with salt and black pepper, and set it aside in a bowl.

Heat a pot over medium heat. Add the sesame oil, seaweed, and meat. Stir well and let it cook for about 2 minutes until the meat is cooked through. Add the fish sauce, garlic, and water. Cover the pot with a lid and heat over medium heat. Add more salt if needed.

While it's still hot, you can enjoy it with hot rice and other Korean side dishes like kimchi.
